What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a severe gum inflammation which has spread to underlying tissues and bone in which the jawbone is degraded. Many people who have periodontitis are not aware of it as they have minor symptoms or even no symptoms at all.

Symptoms of Periodontitis:
- Red, swollen, bleeding gums
- Withdrawn gums
- Strange, foul taste in the mouth
- Bad breath
- Pain when consuming hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks.
- Gaps between the teeth
- Loose teeth and molars
What are the consequences of periodontitis?
If it is not dealt with at an early stage, this inflammation can soon get out of hand. The result of the bone degradation is that teeth and molars become loose, following the bone can become so degraded that there is a strong likelihood of the loss of teeth and molars.

Method of treatment
- Intake consultation
- Case history + oral examination
- Examination of status of periodontium; measurement of depths of pockets (The gap between the gum and the roots)
- X-rays if necessary (this stablishes level of bone loss)
- Personal treatment plan set up.
- We then commence initial therapy (This is the deep cleaning of pockets using specialist equipment)
- If necessary a bacteria test is carried out on the pockets (This is to clarify which harmful bacteria are situated in the pockets)
- If the result is positive, requiring treatment with antibiotics, these will be prescribed.
- After-care appointments are arranged according to the situation and dental self-care.
- Pockets which are too deep and are therefore difficult to clean must be cleaned using a flap operation.
